General Class Offerings

Musical Beginnings (8yrs, automatically placed if your student is 8 years old)
This 10-week-long class provides an introduction to music for younger children, incorporating singing, movement, dictation, and games. The students will begin to learn about musical concepts like rhythm, pitch, dynamics, and form.
Esta clase de 10 semanas de duración brinda una introducción a la música para niños más pequeños, incorporando canto, movimiento, dictado y juegos. Los estudiantes comenzarán a aprender sobre conceptos musicales como ritmo, tono, dinámica y forma.
Basic Musicianship (9+)
The students will learn the basics of reading music and musical terms and symbols, providing a solid foundation for their continuation in musical instruction. This is a one-semester class and passing the test at the end of the semester is required for admission into private lessons.
Los estudiantes aprenden los fundamentos musicales, por ejemplo cómo leer música, términos, e identificación de símbolos. La clase da un fundamento fuerte para continuar los esfuerzos en instrucción privada. Choir Kids (9-12)
No previous choir or singing experience is necessary. This choir is for younger students interested in ensemble singing. Public performances are possible several times yearly. Students will learn the basics of matching pitch and using their voices through a variety of songs and games in a group setting.
No se necesita experiencia previa en coro o canto. Este coro es para estudiantes más jóvenes interesados en cantar en conjunto. Las actuaciones públicas son posibles varias veces al año. Jazz Band (10+)
A traditional big band style ensemble, typically comprised of trumpets, saxophones, trombones, guitars, bass, and drums. Open to any student who is playing at an intermediate level on their instrument with a great interest in studying jazz repertoire, improvisation, history, and performance.
Un conjunto tradicional de estilo big band, típicamente compuesto por trompeta, saxofón, trombón, guitarra, bajo y batería. Music Production (12+)
No prior experience necessary. This is a class in which students explore a Digital Audio Workspace (DAW) and learn to mix and edit audio and MIDI sounds. They may work with programs such as Logic, ProTools, Reaper, and BandLab.
No es necesaria experiencia previa. Esta es una clase en la que los estudiantes exploran un espacio de trabajo de audio digital (DAW) y aprenden a mezclar y editar sonidos de audio y MIDI. Pueden funcionar con programas como Logic, ProTools, Reaper y BandLab.
StringSmiths (12+)
Entrance Requirements: Students must be enrolled in at least their second year of private lessons on a string orchestra instrument. This is a small string ensemble for orchestra instruments, including violin, viola, cello, and acoustic bass.

Steel Drum Ensemble (12+)
No experience is needed at all for this ensemble! Steel drums are percussion instruments that come from Trinidad. There are several different notes to each, but you’ll only have to play 1-3 at a time. If you’ve ever heard a song with a Caribbean style, think Harry Belafonte, you’ve probably heard one before.
¡No se necesita experiencia en absoluto para este conjunto! Los tambores de acero son instrumentos de percusión que provienen de Trinidad. Songwriting & Composition (12+)
This interactive class will help your student explore their creative side and create their own songs and musical compositions. In this class, we will listen to music, talk about musical elements, and get creative to write our own music! This is a great outlet for students who are interested in musical exploration, poetry and lyrics, and song form.
Esta clase interactiva ayudará a su estudiante a explorar su lado creativo y crear sus propias canciones y composiciones musicales. ¡En esta clase, escucharemos música, hablaremos sobre elementos musicales y seremos creativos para escribir nuestra propia música! Esta es una gran oportunidad para los estudiantes interesados en la exploración musical, la poesía y las letras, y la forma de las canciones.
Audio Production (12+)
Audio Production will give students insight and useful knowledge in Live and Recorded music. Students will learn to run live sound, record audio, build a session, and produce tracks while getting hands-on experience with sound equipment and software. This class is project-based and will include working alone and in a group.

Polyphony Choir (13+)
This choir is for the older student interested in four-part ensemble singing. Public performances are possible several times yearly. No previous choir or singing experience is necessary. Students will learn to sing harmonies in a variety of styles in a group setting.
Este coro es para los estudiantes mayores interesados en el canto conjunto de SATB. Las actuaciones públicas son posibles varias veces al año. No se necesita experiencia previa en coro o canto. Los estudiantes aprenderán a cantar armonías en una variedad de estilos en un entorno grupal.
Singer’s Studio (14+)
Suggested for students interested in voice as a 2nd instrument or solo singing opportunities. No prior experience is necessary. This class will be geared towards singers interested in learning about vocal technique, performance techniques, and vocal health. This class will be conducted like a vocal seminar in which each student will be required to sing solo in front of the class every other week.
Sugerido para estudiantes interesados en la voz como segundo instrumento o oportunidades de canto en solitario. No es necesaria experiencia previa. Esta clase estará dirigida a cantantes interesados en aprender sobre técnica vocal, técnicas de interpretación y salud vocal. Advanced Theory (14+)
Entrance Requirements: Student must be 14 to 18 and taking a private music lesson. Placement is at the discretion of the staff. This is a class for devoted students to learn further aspects of music theory which includes multiple clef reading skills, scale construction, scale degrees, intervals, chord spelling, rhythm reading, key signatures, and more. This is a required class for any student who wishes to major in music in college.

Junior Jam
Entrance Requirements: Student must be age 8 and have taken Musical Beginnings.This 12 week long class provides students with experience in classroom instruments such as the Loog guitar, recorder, percussion ensemble, and more.
ContempoKids
Entrance Requirements: Student must be age 9 to 18 and have an interest in composition. This 12-week-long class provides students with an opportunity to express their creativity through music. Students will study expression, notation, and create music through technology and traditional methods.
Video Production
Entrance Requirements: Student must be 15 to 18 and taking a private music lesson. Placement is at the discretion of the staff. This is an introduction to Video Production and works with the Audio Production class. The class creates a story board and executes it with Adobe Premiere.
Lab Band: Entrance Requirements: Students must be proficient in reading music OR must have completed the Basic Musicianship class at W.O. Smith. This ensemble focuses on instrumental music exploration.
